Let the Right One In (Swedish version)

I have seen both the American and Swedish versions of this romantic vampire story. Both films are worth watching but the original is the Swedish Let the Right One in.

For being a vampire film, this one is anything but your cliche vampire film filled with lust, blood and vampires who are irresistible. The story follows Oskar a skinny young lonely boy who is bullied at school and lives with his mother in this old apartment building. Oskar is a very interesting character because he seems harmless and gets bullied around at school because he is such a pansy and doesn't stick up for himself, yet when he is alone he has fits of rage and collects murder stories out of the newspaper. He also has knife that he sometimes practices on trees with.  A young vampire girl named Eli moves into the apartment next door with her seemingly older care taker. Eli has a mysterious quality to her and quickly becomes a person of great interest to the lonely Oskar. Eli and Oskar become acquainted in the apartments courtyard and Eli tells him that they cannot be friends. Of course Oskar is not satisfied with their brief encounter so he tries to spend time with Eli whenever he can and befriends her.

Basically, Eli and Oskar become this dynamic duo of mysterious friends who only see each other sometimes and speak through morse code through their bedroom walls. My favorite part about this movie is that they keep Eli being a vampire pretty secretive and we only learn about her and her caretaker at the last half of the movie. The story is really about the relationship between Oskar and Eli. They have an odd bond where they look out for eachother in a totally unromantic way, well at least until the end. What really sells a story to me is a stories characters, the actors in this film are so believable in convincing you that Eli is a good little vampire girl and Oskar is a good little violent boy who seeks revenge and the two are like peanut butter and jelly. It is becoming increasingly hard to create a new vampire story but this one takes the cake for most unique in my eyes. It has just the right amount of gore and blood while keeping its innocent childlike mood.
